Lake Scugog sits between Port Perry and Lindsay, often described as marking the southern edge of Ontario’s cottage country. It’s a large lake, about 68 square kilometres, but a shallow one, averaging just 1.4 metres deep, which shapes both its ecology and the way people use it.
The lake is actually artificial, created in the 1830s when a dam was built on the Scugog River, and its shallow, marshy edges now support a wide range of wildlife along with strong fishing for bass, walleye, and muskie. Scugog Island, home to the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, sits within the lake itself.
Because it’s closer to the GTA than most of the lakes further into the Kawarthas, Lake Scugog is often the first stop for buyers making the move out of the city, offering waterfront living with a shorter drive back for family visits or a commute. I work with a lot of clients in exactly that position.
