Mitchell Lake is a reservoir, built in the early 1900s alongside the Kirkfield Lift Lock, and it sits right at the summit of the Trent-Severn Waterway, the high point where water divides to flow toward Balsam Lake and Lake Ontario in one direction and Canal Lake and Lake Simcoe in the other.
It’s shallow and marshy in character, generally three to six feet deep, with a causeway along Hartley Road dividing it into two connected sections. That kind of quiet, sheltered water tends to draw waterfowl and anglers more than it does high-speed boat traffic.
