Katchewanooka Lake sits right at Lakefield, where the Otonabee River widens before continuing north toward Young’s Point. At about 8 kilometres long, it’s a narrower, quieter lake than some of its neighbours, and its location puts residents within walking distance of the shops, cafes, and services in the village itself, something not every lake on this list can offer.
The lake has real history: author Susanna Moodie lived on a farm along its shore in the 1830s and wrote about the area in Roughing It in the Bush. Lakefield College School has sat on the eastern shoreline for well over a century, and the lake remains a favourite for canoeing and kayaking thanks to its calmer water.
Because Lakefield has a year-round population and full services, homes here tend to work well both as a first waterfront property and as a place to downsize into without leaving town life behind entirely. It’s an area I know especially well, since my own office is right on Queen Street.
